I recently had the pleasure of attending the Transfer Pre-Engineering Program at UC Berkeley. During this program, I worked with a group to create a product that would help fix the postures of students. The product attaches to the students backpack to detect when the student is slouching. The signal is sent to an app that sends the user a notification, provides daily slouching analytics, and gamifies slouching to incentivize better posture for students. My responsibility in this project was to design the device itself and 3D print the prototypes.

I designed the final model with the intent of 3D printing a working prototype. This model used the elastic properties of PLA plastic as well as a hinge at the bottom to reduce the stress at that pivot point.

Our final prototype consisted of a 3D printed shell, a flex sensor, a battery, and a microcontroller.

The device works by detecting the positions of the flex sensor depending on the posture of the user. The user would input their personal threshold of good and bad posture, then when they slouch, their back will press into the device, causing it to trigger.

At the end of the the program, we presented our device, which we named the Posture Pack, to industry professionals. We created a five minute slide deck and detailed both the problem and solution. After the presentation, we discussed our design choices with the industry professionals and took suggestions.
